Each year, over 17,000 traffic signs on the public road system in unincorporated Pierce County, Washington are knocked down, stolen, or defaced. This vandalism costs taxpayers over $300,000 per year, and can present serious traffic safety concerns when key installations such as Stop or Yield signs are affected. Similar impacts occur when traffic signal lights are shot out, pedestrian pushbuttons are tampered with, and poles and cabinets are hit with graffiti.
