Product models for structural streelwork - a basis for computer integrated data transfer

While technical software products are widely used in all design and fabrication stages of structural steelwork there is a lack of an efficient data transfer between different software packages. Therefore the industry demands strongly, that data created within one program may automatically exchanged with any other program. Compared to existing solutions the superiority of the concept of product models is demonstrated and fundamental aspects of product modelling are given. Existing product models developed in Europe are presented and partly compared. Two examples are showing the use of a product model in data transfer.
