To complete a thermal analysis of an airborne high voltage power supply, the transformer material properties and winding power dissipation values have to be determined. Since the complex transformer assembly process involves multiple wound layers of different materials all impregnated with epoxy, the material properties are impractical to find or measure directly. Because of the high levels of voltage and electromagnetic interference within the transformer, traditional methods of measuring the power dissipation can not be accomplished either. However, using a practical application of the inverse determination method, there unknowns can be estimated. The method utilizes detailed numerical simulations with expeerimtnal verification. Finite element models are created and then correlated to specialized thermal tests using a manual parametric study. This paper describes the process used to estimate these unknown transformer thermophysical properites and windign dissipations.
