Environmental Risk Assessment and Management: Towards an Integrated Approach

The capability of large industrial installations to cause under certain circumstances accidents with undesired consequences to human health and the environment has been acknowledged for some time now. For this reason, the European Commission issued already from 1982 the Directive 82/501/EEC, the so-called "Seveso Directive", which provides, together with its Amendments, the legislative framework for controlling major accident hazards in the European countries. Moreover, a large number of sophisticated tools and methods have been developed by various research organizations and are available to the analysts for risk assessment.
