As commercial airframers such as Boeing focus on improving profitability, low cost options for primary structure such as titanium castings are being seriously considered. Titanium castings offer nearly equivalent static strength properties as their equivalent wrought competition, but offer a potential for major reductions in machining. In addition to reduced machine time, castings can allow for dramatic design simplifications, employing fewer parts and fasteners and opening the door to more production friendly design philosophies such as Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Determinant Assembly (DA).
