Much study has been conducted on generating assembly plans from assembly drawings. However, methods previously proposed have generated assembly plans by reversing orders of disassembly plans. Consequently the amount of information of graphs that describe all the assembly plans grows exponentially according to the number of parts in an assembly. Therefore, because of the explosion, it is impossible to generate the best plan by method previously proposed in the case of assemblies that included many parts. In our method, assembly matrices include information about assembly methods, assembly directions and assembly possibilities between every pair of parts. A user makes assembly plans on assembly matrices by using automatic generating subassemblies that are made by dividing assembly martices and automatic generating AND/OR graphs. Consequently our method is able to avoid the explosion and to generate best plans.
