Over the past few years the type and level of sophistication of Man Machine Interface (MMI), that is, the interaction, communication and process parameter record keeping that goes on between machines and the people who are responsible for their operation, has become the focus of a significant amount of system design and process engineering effort. The amount and the level of communication that has to happen, in real-time and for archival purposes, is significantly more and far more complex than what it was just a few years ago. As recently as five or six years ago in most cases, MMI was limited to what was written down with pen, on paper, by people. The records were often in the form of log books or process record sheets. They were more often than not plagued with numerous errors and omissions. Human nature being what it is, coupled with the distractions and changing priorities ever present in most manufacturing environments, resulted in less than complete documentation, which we like to call data. This was true across the board. Product, prrocess, machine and maintenance record keeping, in most cases, left a lot to be desired.
