UV-Polymerizable Monomer Comparisons 2: Physical Properties of Acrylate Functional Monomer Blends

Several sets of blends containing photopolymerizable, acrylate functional monomers have been prepared and evaluated for the effects of blend composition on viscosity, density, and refractive index. In all cases, the blends evaluated showed a negative deviation in viscosity and either no deviation or positive deviation in density from that of "ideal" liquid mixtures. In contrast, no clear trends were evident in the refractive index data. The degree of deviation from ideal is believed to be related directly to the relative strength of the intermolecular attractive forces and to the molecular size and shape of the monomers involved. Monomer pairs that are similar in molecular structure were expected to demonstrate less deviation from ideal behavior than those with dissimilar molecular structures. With few exceptions, the results of this study appeared to support this idea. Possible explanations for the exceptions are given in this paper.
