Polymerization kinetics of photocurable formulations can be precisely monitored in real-time by a fluorescence technique, using microenvironment-sensing probes and newly developed SGL/ORIEL Rapid Scan Fluorimeter. There is a smooth correlation between the fluorescence intensity ratio monitored at two wavelengths and the degree of cure, and, a linear correlation between the fluorescence intensity at a single wavelength and the coat-weigth of the coatings. both the degree of cure and the coat-weight can be monitored simultaneously. Applicability of the technique for on-line monitoring and control of photocuring processes is discussed, and, methods of optimization of measurement parameters for the monitoring of degree of cure and coat-weight of photocurable coatings to maximize the method sensitivity are proposed. Example results of real-time monitoring of photocuring of some commercial photocurable resins and applicability of the real-time curing profiles for quality control of photocurable resin formulations is suggested.
