Photoplymerization Behavior Of Several Cationic Photoinitiators In Cationically Cured Resin Systems

Three onium salt cationic photoinitiators were evaluated in cationically cured and hybrid resin systems. The onium salts evaluated include triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate, triarylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate, and a diaryliodonium hexafluoroantimonate which has been recently introduced to the industry. The salts were evaluated in a number of resin systems including cycloaliphatic epoxy/caprolactone triol blends, cycloaliphatic epoxy/vinyl ether blends, and epoxy acrylate/vinyl ether blends. The reactivity of the three photoinitiators have been compared and the resultant physical properties of the cured films were measured. Basic formulating guidelines for the use of these cationic photoinitiators are also discussed.
