As the research community searches for cost-effective measures to extend service life and to improve performance of infrastructure under severe loading conditions such as earthquakes, hybrid construction with concrete and fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) has been regarded as an efficient system with pseudo-ductile characteristics and high stiffness and strength properties. Extensive experimental and analytical studies at the University of Central Florida and the Structural Research Center of the Florida Department of Transportation indicate that concrete-filled FRP tubes can produce high-performance concrete (15-20 ksi strength and 0.02-0.04 strain) from normal-strength concrete (3-5 ksi strength and 0.003-0.004 strain). The tube acts as the formwork, protective jacket, confinement, and flexural reinforcement. It is envisioned that full section enclosure with FRP tube can serve as the sole structural reinforcement, or complement the internal reinforcement of the column. Moreover, the proposed system cn be used for cast-in-place as well as precast (prefabricated) columns. An overview of various aspects of the analysis and design of hybrid columns is presented.
