The current trend towards automation and high precision of manufactured parts have necessitated the automation of manual inspection to keep pace with the increased productivity and maintain repeatability in measurement. Thus to automate the inspection process, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are used for dimensional gaging of mechanical parts. The use of automated CMMs for inspection and process control has resultedin the identification of technological voids that need further research and understanding. Due to the absence of an established standard for inspection, most computer assisted CMMs currently use different measurement techniques and analysis routines, which produce different results from the measurement of the same part features. Thus there is a need for an explicit mathematical definition of geometric dimensions and tolerances (e.g. ANSI Y14.5), along with an associated standard of dimensional measurement techniques and methods.
