A beginning was made in the Hydropower Generation in India with the commissioning of a small unit of 130 KW in Sidrapong Power Station in the tea estates of Darjeeling way back in 1897, which is still in operation.HydropowerDevelopment was rather modest during pre-independence period. But after independence stress was laid for its accelerated development especially when planned growth of economy was envisaged tinder successive five year plans realising that availability of power was the Key input for economic development of the country to usher better standard of living for millions of people.
