The performance of a rotary compressor is very much dependent on the control of key clearances between the moving parts that separate various internal compressor regions. The gaps in these key clearances should receive adequate lubricating oil to reduce friction, wear, and leakage. This paper presents the modeling approach developed, as part of a comprehensive simulation, to address the leakage occurring through the clearances of seven principal leakage paths. Results from a parameter variation study of these leakage paths performed using the simulation are presented to address issues of appropriateness of leakage models, and effects of these leakage paths on compressor performance. Also, a comparison between predicted and measured test results is presented.
