The concept of using a ballast mat for reduction of groundborne vibration has been around for over twenty years. Early experiments with ballast mats took many forms including the use of recycled automobile tires. Today, the ballast mats which are available for groundborne noise and vibration control are essentially fixed designs available from a few manufacturers. In general, each manufacturer offers some, although usually limited, variation in the ballast mat design parameters for the purpose of selecting a suitable design to meet the requirements of a particular application. The performance of the ballast mat is dependent on the entire trackway system. Groundborne vibration measurements were made for revenue LRV trains running on embedded track. Measurements were made for tracks with and without ballast mat to make possible the determination of the performance of the ballast mat in terms of reducing groundborne vibration. The measured data are compared with other available measurement data on ballast mats.
