A hypertext knowledge presentation system for technology transfer

Technology transfer between two disparate communities requires the control and understanding of large amounts of technical information. The scheme used to manage this knowledge must be capable of dealing with the varying perspectives and objectives of the two groups. Technology transfer is a two-way process, and it is necessary to bridge the gap between the viewpoints associated with the two communities involved in the transfer. Techniques to efficiently archive and retrieve large amounts of information and to facilitate two-way communications can address this need. A software environment is used to organize the information into a logical framework, to store and access all essential background information and results, and to allow participants to use the knowledge as a basis for questions, recommendations, or feedback to other users of the system. This environment incorporates a hypertext system structure, search and travel facilities, and an interactive communications facility. A prototype system for technology transfer from research to engineering development has been developed to illustrate these concepts.
