Prototypes of new software systems are often instrumental in eliciting key user feedback on a system's design. Using object-oriented (OO) programming techniques and reusable software components can results in faster and better prototypes wich, in turn, can greatly enhance the quality and timeliness of user feedback and, eventually, the system design. While many prototyping efforts might use reusable components, others might result in the development or enhancement of reusable components. Both benefit by process guidance, to ensure the timeliness and quality of the resultant product. This paper describes prototype process guidelines for the development of prototypes using object-oriented techniques and reusable components, as well as for the development of reusable components. It draws upon several years of experiences using and developing reusable components.
