SIGNAL SYSTEM DESIGN ISSUES FOR SMALL TO MID-SIZE CITIES

It is strongly recommended that small to mid-size cities carefully consider the maintenance requirements of a traffic signal system and their system goals during the design stage of the project. As shown in the comparison between signal systems, significant cost savings are achievable if some components of an existing system are reused. However, to minimize future maintenance costs, an agency may elect to pay more for construction. The maintenance capabilities of the jurisdiction and the system goals should be evaluated to assure they are consistent with the design of the signal system.
