Today, with the size of landfills growing at an alarming rate, recycling has become a pertinent issue. Paper and plastic are the two largest contributors by volume to landfills. One way to reduce the amount of these materials in landfills is to combine the two to produce a substitute lumber product. By compounding recycled high density polyethylene with processed old news print, mechanical properties can be improved and part cost reduced. However, an optimum process must first be determined before a commercially acceptable compounded material can be produced.
