Recycling of commingled, post-consumer polyolefins have been successfully demonstrated via novel SSSE pulverization process utilizing Berstorff's prototype pilot-scale co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Polyolefin powders made from multi-color feedstocks have homogeneous, unusually light colors. Injection-molded test specimens prepared from powders had uniform color an very smooth, glossy surface appearance. Scanning electron microscopy and image analysis revealed the evidence of the shearing process. The micrographs showed the transformation from flakes to fluff or powder of various sizes and shapes.Further development of the SSSE pulverization process and equipment, is proceeding simultaneously on the laboratory and pilot scales. A modified version ofBerstorff s twin-screw extruder will be installed at BIRL shortly. Optimization of the process and equipment design will facilitate commercialization of this novel, promising recycling technology.
