In Europe research on heavy ion beam drivers for inertial fusion has focused on RF accelerators and storage rings, which are commonly used in medium and high energy physics. The paper presents the status of studies regarding a full reactor driver accelerator as well as an Ignition Facility. The latter is the subject of an initiative of several European laboratories that proposes to the European Commission a study on the feasibility of an accelerator leading to ignition.
