It has already been four years now since HDTV test broadcasting started in November, 1991, using Japanese broadcasting satellite. Initially an 8-hour-a-day broadcast, the length has increased each year to the current 11 hours a day. It was upgraded in November last year to the next stage of test broadcasting to prepare for full-scale applications with enriched contents.The debut of inexpensive HDTV receivers and a likely substantial reduction in the price of television cameras and VTRs have laid a solid ground for the future of HDTV. This paper reports on HDTV program production and equipment development that are taking place at NHK.
