A brief review is presented of studies devoted to the synthesis of materials by sol-gel technology which are performed by the scientists of Latvia. Among the materials synthesized and investigated are planar humidity sensors, proton electrolytes for electrochromic devices, glasses of SiO_2-P_2O_5, CdO-P_2O_5-SiO_2 systems, TiO_2-SiO_2, Fe_2O_3-SiO_2, BaO-Fe_2O_3-TiO_2-SiO_2 coatings and liquid crystal derived SiO_2-TiO_2-ZrO_2 sol-gel compositions. The sol-gel technology was used to make the existing products better, to develop new materials, to improve the methods of synthesis of materials.
