The effects of TMOS:TEOS ratio and solvents on the sol-gel process of the glasses in the PbO-B2O3-SiO2 system were studied in order to obtain xerogels without cracks. It was revealed that the optimum TMOS:TEOS ratio was about 1:1. Adding (CH3)2SO enables to avoid cracks of the xerogel during drying. TG-DTA-MS spectrographs showed a great number of OR groups remained in the gel of DMSO-containing system that might beneficial to form a branched uniform network which can resist the drying stress and to prevent cracks. The mechanism of thermal decomposition of DMSO-containing system was discussed on the basis of the polarization of S on Si.
