COLOURED COATINGS FOR TELEVISION TUBES: PARAMETERS DETERMINING THE DYE INCORPORATION

The maximum concentration of solvent dye that can be incorporated in a spun silica-based sol-gel coating is studied. The cationic Xanthene dye series is chosen as a model system. These dyes have the same basic skeleton with different functional groups. The maximum dye concentration is followed as a function of the type of solvent, the water content and the presence of a second reactive metal-alkoxide in the precursor sol-gel solution. In addition, the timing of dye addition to the sol-gel solution is taken as a parameter. A mechanism is proposed to explain the results.
