The explicit fifth-order weighted compact nonlinear scheme (WCNS-E-5) developed by Deng shows good dispersive and dissipative features, as well as robustness capturing discontinuities. In this paper some application studies of WCNS-E-5 are taken on shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions and aerodynamic heating prediction in hypersonic flows. Some simulations are done on three examples both with finite difference method of WCNS-E-5 and second-order finite volume method which is very common in engineering use. Some comparisons are made on grid convergence between the two methods through a deal of numerical tests on hollow cylinder-flare flow. Some more comparisons are made on the predictions for the aerodynamic heating over two hypersonic vehicle configurations using multi block grids, which are a blunt cone at mach 10.6 and a double-ellipsoid at mach 8.15.
