Coal of certain cleanliness is essential for preparing coal-based low-ash activated carbon. Such premium coal is scarce in nature occurrence and coal cleaning is consequently a necessary process. To have a coal-based activated carbon containing less than 2percent ash, coal concentrate with ash content of 0.5 to 0.8percent is required. Extent of ash reduction is higher for coal with higher volatile matter content. Anyway, this implies removal from coal matrix of mineral matters in micronized size. Coal can be processed to any degree of cleanliness by chemical methods. However, production cost of chemical process is in most cases economically unacceptable.
