Power system state estimation is a critical function in the energy control center. State estimators process telemetered measurements, network topology, and branch impedance data and provide estimates of key power system quantities, both telemetered and non-telemetered, such as voltage magnitudes, phase angles and power injections at network buses, LTC and phase shifting transformer tap positions, and power and current flows in network branches. In the process, stat eestimators also identify erroneous measurements and replace their values. The results of state estimation represent an accurate and complete description of the current condition of a power system and are used by power system dispatchers to control the network and by a variety of analytical on-line security and optimization applications.
