Numerous studies on centrifugal pumps used in diverse fields have shown the profound effects of rotation speed on the pump characteristics. If a pump designed to run at 3000 rpm is operated at 1500 rpm the efficiency reduces to less than 50%.The focus of this study is to determine how a change in rotation speed affects the pump characteristics and whether this effect has a maximum or minimum value. As a result of the experiments ran on this set-up the optimum rotation speed has been determined experimentally.The curves obtained from the experiments show that the pump characteristics increase with pump speed and then decrease after this value. Thus, when designing a pump in addition to dimensions the optimum pump speed has to be determined. This way the pump can run at maximum efficiency, minimum power, best head and flow rate.
