Reclaimed Water as Cooling Tower Makeup for Refinery/Petrochemical Plants-Southern California's Activities and Time Table

The West Basin Municipal water district (WBMWD) provides water to more than thirty city water departments and water companies in the Los angeles area. SInce fresh water is a most valuable resource in southern California, the WBMWD has undertaken a major program to make more available by having industry utilize reclaim and recycle treated municipal sewage effluent that is currently released into the ocean. Known as the West Basin Water Recycling Project, this program will treat and recycle 70,000 acre-feet/year (nearly 23 billion gallons/year) of waste water for a variety of uses such as: industrial cooling and boiler water makeup (a major user), landscape irrigation at golf courses, public parks, schools, cemeteries and highway and road medians (a minor user), and for reinjection to replenish groundwater (a major need); all to replace fresh water which will be used for drinking (-otable) water.
