Three MAC protocols for very-high-speed LANs and MA.Xs are compared from the point of view of the quality of service that they can provide in a mixed-traffic scenario where connection-oriented CBR and VBR video services coexist with connectionless data services. The three considered MAC protocols are DQDB (with and without slot reuse capabilities), CRMA, and CRMA-I1. The three MAC protocols are studied by simulation, con-sidering a network with 1 Gbit/s data rate, and 5 km span. The performance metrics used for the MAC protocol comparison are the average and the variance of the SDU delay, as well as the fraction of SDUs lost due to buffer overflow.
