Distributed algorithms for flow control and call set-up in a broadband packet network

In coping with traffic burstiness in broadband ISDN, two of the main tasks in resource administration are the control of traffic flow and call admission. This paper presents distributed algorithms for packet-level traffic control and call set-up for the integrated mix of both connectionless and connection oriented traffic. The packet-level control functions are designed for sub-microsecond execution by simple hardware. Their characteristics include low buffer memory requirement, low packet loss rate, high bandwidth utilization, and preservation of the order among sequential packets. The concomitant algorithm for call set-up is executed solely at the traffic originating node and does not require a process of bandwidth allocation. The call set-up process requires no inter-node communications among originating, receiving, and intermediate nodes. Simulation of a broadband network with a general topology has confirmed that, under different traffic mixes, parameters in algorithms can be adjusted for achieving high bandwidth utilization and low packet loss rate at the same time.
