Abstract: An important incentive not to neglect dynamic effectsin the study of martensitic transformations is thefailure of the usual energy minimization arguments topredict the observed coexistence of phases atnonminimal energy and the associated hysteresisphenomena. Here we suggest that a simple viscoelasticdynamic model is capable of capturing these phenomena.!21
