Tests of the carrier-to-nonlinear-distortion(C/NLD)were performed on a Fabry-Perot(F-P)laser.For the C/NLD levels necessary for digital transmission on subcaniers, the distortion was dominated by clipping and matched that of expensive, highly linear DFB lasers.Using an F-P laser, the equivalent of 80 compressed MPEG digital video channels are transmitted through 18 km of single mode fiber. The signals are transmittedon 20 subcarriers with 6 MHz channel spacing using differential quadrature-phase-shift-keyed(DQPSK)modulation and a simple delay-line demodulator.
