Telephone companies or Local Exchange Carriers(LECs) in the United States plan to deploy single-mode optical fibre in the near future to begin to replace most of the copper in the distribution portion of their networks. This can be made possible through the use of Fibre in the Loop(FITL) systems. With such systems, telephone companies will be able to deliver existing telecommunications services as well as future video services to residential and small business customers. Also, these FITL systems will allow them to provide the physical infrastructure for delivering future broadband services. To facilitate a coordinated multivendor deployment, system-level genetic requirements have been proposed by Bellcore. These generic requirements allow FITL suppliers to meet a minimum number of functional reqnirements and to promote their creativity and innovation in their designs. Suppliers should be encouraged to design feature-rich products with competitive prices. This is important since the strategy for deployment in the US is based on cost parity with the copper-based alternatives for providing basic, POTS-like services.
