The viabilitv of distributed control restoration using Digital Cross-Connect Systems (DCSS)depends on its capabilitv for restoring services within specified time requirements and its economics for providing restoration compared with other altematives.In this paper,we report a Bellcore study for the impact of the DCS architecture on distributed restoration.This study concludes that currently proposed distributed control DCS self-healing schemes may not meet the 2-second restoration obiective regardless of the distributed algorithm if the present DCS system architecture(i.e.,serial processing and serial cross-connection)remain unchanged.This paper also discusses several DCS architecture options which may improve the restoration time.
