In order to achieve an efficient operation in an open pit mine it is very important to develop and maintain good coordination and communication between various departments within the operation. This paper will address this subject using methods and procedures developed at an open pit gold mine in northern Nevada.This information will be of interest and possible aid to drill and blast supervisors, production supervisors, maintenance supervisors, planning engineers, management and operators.With the cost of mining increasing steadily, it is imperative that departments within the mine coordinate their efforts in order to lower costs. Mine planning needs to develop a workable mine plan. Drill and blast follows this mine plan in order to keep blasted material in front of production. Production can only mine where there is blasted material, but in what sequence they mine is very important.Coordination between maintenance and all departments is a must in order to schedule planned down times.Slope stability and the steepness of pitwalls has a huge bearing on the cost of mining a deposit. Some procedures in developing pit high walls have been established. These procedures take effort, communication and coordination to succeed.The procedures described in the paper have proven successful in operation.
