We have described a prospective large-scale rewiring with fiber of the LECs' local access networks. The consequences of this rewired loop plant are a huge increase in remote electronics and a shift in the bulk of the telecommunications packaging andinterconnection concerns from central office equipment design to remote electronic node equipment design. A very different set of design tradeoffs results from moving from central office to remote sites, from benign to hostile environments, from spacious, regular enclosures to space-constrained, highly variable enclosures, from all copper to mixed media, from limited to nearly unlimited network bandwidth, from power consuming to power conserving design, from proprietary interfaces to open standard interfaces, and from predictable POTS service to uncertain, but enormously varied kinds of service.
