A user-oriented synthetic workload generator that simulates userfile access behavior on the basis of real workload characterizations isdescribed. The workload generator is designed for experiments andsimulations related to file system analysis. The model for this workloadgenerator is user-oriented and job-specific, represents file I/Ooperations at the system call level, allows general distributions forusage measures, and assumes independence in the file I/O operationstream. The workload generator consists of three parts that handlespecification of distributions, creation of an initial file system, andselection and execution file I/O operations. Results from experiments ona network file system (NFS) verify that the workload generator canproduce realistic workloads and demonstrate the application of thegenerator
