Case study: ozone-based water treatment for high-quality air and water in a municipal swimming center

The City of Westimster, Colorado, U.S.A. opened a recreation center in 1986 which showcased three leisure pools with several innovative water features. SHortly after opening, lifeguards at the facility began to suffer s ymptoms of hypersensitivity penemonitis (H.P.). The pools were closed dhown and improvements were made to the air handling system, but the H.P. symptoms returned. After extensive infestigations, a City task force concluded that improvements to the water treatment system using an ozone s ystem based on German PIN Standards would be required. The ozone system was installed, and the pools were re-opened in the Fall of 1992. Water quality tests have confirmed that the ozone system provides low endotoxin levels, the H.P. symptoms have not returned and Colorado health officials have concluded that further active surveillance of pool employees is not necessary.
