Effect of oznation on various properties of aquatic natural organic matter

Natural Organic matter (NOM) was isolated and extracted from a surface water source. It w as then fractionated into various homogeneous compound classes. The effect of ozonation on selected physico-chemical characteristics of these fractions that are relevant to water treatment were studied. It is expected that understanding the effect of ozonation on these properties will help gaining a better understanding of removal of NOM during the coagulation of preozonated waters. Specifically the properties studied were reactivity, changes in molecular size and chnges in organic charge and acidity. Based on the above characterization the probabile effect of ozonation on the removal of these fractions during coagulation is discussed.
