By-products of ozonation of low bromide waters and reduction of the by-products by activated carbon

Using ion chromatography, the formation characteristic of by-product following ozonation of 0.5 mg/L bromide-containing water was studied. Under drinking water treatment conditions (Br 0.5 mg/L, pH chemical bounds 7.24, 1.3mgO_3/L), formation of brO_3 was not detected in 10 minute's ozonation, but for the ozonation of 20 minutes, 7 #mu# g/L of BrO_3 was formed. For higher ozone concentration and/or higher pH, more BrO_3 is formed.
