摘要

A progress report on the impact of funding on research presented. The purpose is to examine if quality research is generated by a sustained period of substantial funding support. The research on a tropical disease, schistosomiasis, has been selected for study. Over 78 mi11ion dollars have been awarded during a 17 year period. Four major funding agencies have supported a total of 351 individuals. Several quality indicators have been developed. The results of analysis of three indicators of quality are presented. There is evidence that (1) funding and research productivity are positively correlated; (2) sponsored researchers have a higher degree of probability of being cited b. review articles; and finally (3) funded researchers are likely to publish in quality journals.
