THERMOMECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF FIBRE REINFORCED REFRACTORY CASTABLES

This paper deals with the reinforcement of refractory concretes with short fibres. Various materials are considered: 1- a geopolymer based refractory concrete reinforced with stainless steel fibres 2- an andalusite based concrete reinforced on the one hand with glass fibres and on the other hand with alumina-rich fibres, 3- a bauxite based concrete reinforced with a mix of sintered bauxite fibres and of stainless steel fibres. Their thermomechanical behaviour has been studied up to 1100°C. Results show the benefit effects of such reinforcements. Each fibre type has a specific effect on the refractory concrete behaviour. Introducing metallic fibres allow to increase the strain capability in the pre-peak and in the post-peak domains. Introducing mineral fibres essentially modify the pre-peak behaviour by changing the diffuse damage domain, leading to a more linear behaviour and to an increase of the peak stress values. Coupling the introduction of metallic and mineral fibres allows to increase both the stress and the strain capabilities of the refractory concrete.
