Alumina-magnesia refractory castables are widely used in steel ladles, due to the high corrosion resistance associated with the in situ spinel (MgAl_2O4) formation. This reaction usually takes place at temperatures higher than 1100°C. Nevertheless, as the magnesium aluminate spinel is formed in situ, the reduction of its starting temperature is a key issue for attaining high performance materials.
