Underpinning and Foundation Skanska was awarded $70 million over three separate contracts from general contractors under agreements with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) to install deep foundation elements as a part of the upgrades to the Newtown Creek WPCP. This wastewater treatment facility is the largest of 14 WPCPs servicing New York City and handles the needs of over 1 million people daily. See Figure 1 for an aerial view of the plant nestled within Greenpoint, Brooklyn, circa 2005. The ongoing upgrades have been designed to meet the growing demand on the plant which has been in operation since 1967, and to bring more advanced water treatment technology to an environmentally sensitive area.
