Lateral load design of structures supported on deep foundations and subjected to earthquakes, high winds or wave action is of a great importance. Most investigations on laterally loaded pile groups have been performed on pile groups installed in sites with horizontal ground surface (e.g., Ogasawara et al., 1993; Okahara et al., 1993; Adachi et al., 1994; Mcvay et al., 1994 and 1995; Kimura et al., 1995; Rollins et al., 1998). However, there are many practical situations where piles are constructed near to the edge of a slope. Little information is available on the effect of a slope adjacent to the pile groups and the effect of pile groups arrangement on the group efficiency when the group is loaded towards the slope.
