HIGH THROUGHPUT METHODS FOR DEVELOPING WATERBORNE COATING FORMULATIONS

In today's business environment, there are multiple pressures to successfully develop and introduce complex new coating products quickly. Improving the environmental profile of these new products is a major driver that often requires significantly different formulation strategies. This is the case for traditional solventborne coatings being converted to waterborne systems or existing waterborne coatings being reformulated for significant improvement in VOC and other properties. These complex waterborne coating formulations offer an excellent opportunity to use the strengths of high throughput (HT) research to understand how ingredient interactions affect final properties. Rapid formulation and testing allows the interactions between formulation variables to be investigated in more depth and breadth, leading to better products more quickly. These high throughput methods include the use of specially designed experiments, high throughput formulation, coating, characterization tools, and informatics for extracting knowledge from data. An example of how Dow is using a high throughput coatings workflow to improve properties derived from waterborne coatings formulations will be presented.
