Talc-TPO formulations have been developed that offer ductile impact performance at -40°C and stiffness valuesas high as 2100 MPa using an ethylene-octene based impact modifier resin in a homopolymer polypropylene matrix with a melt flow rate of either 5 or 35 MFR. The results indicate that the choice of talc plays a significant role in maximizing the stiffness/toughness balance of TPO formulations. It is also shown that the addition of talc to TPO formulations could improve not only the stiffness but also the low-temperature toughness of the product for a large range of TPO formulations. Talc products showing the best performance are the submicron Jetfine~® 3CA and the new North American Jetfine~®talc.
