DICOM, which stands for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine, is a standard that has been developed to promote communication of digital image information, regardless of device manufacturer within a medical imaging environment. The goal is to put the images and all important information associated with the patient, in a format which allows easy interconnection and interaction of medical imaging equipment with the data. A medical image without associated information is not very useful and management of these images and this information requires other workflow management services that DICOM addresses. A DICOM structured report using tags, can convey any kind of structured content and can be defined more by how it is constructed than by what it contains. This paper explains a suggestive method to study DICOM tags and definitions related to each medical imaging modality for structured reporting, medical image processing and analysis purposes.
